Company description

WS Atkins plc (Atkins) is engaged in engineering and design consultancies. It operates in five segments: UK, North America, Middle East, Asia Pacific and Europe, and Energy. In the United Kingdom its areas of operation include water, environment, education, aerospace, defense and infrastructure design. In North America it provides infrastructure planning, engineering, construction management, environmental consulting, urban planning, architecture and program management services. In the Middle East it provides a range of design, engineering and project management services for buildings, transportation and other infrastructure programs. In its Asia Pacific business it provides engineering, planning, urban design, architectural and rail design services. In Hong Kong it delivers services in urban rail development. Its Energy business provides engineering and project management services. On June 3, 2011, the Company acquired Poyry plc.

Employee ownership description

At one time in the mid 1980s, WS Atkins was majority owned by employees following a transfer by the founding family to employee benefit trusts. By the end of the 1990s, and following a listing in 1996, Atkins's shareholder base had shifted substantially, with the Atkins family retaining just 7 percent of shares, and the company's employees just over 30 percent. According to the company s 2012 report, Employee share ownership is encouraged to facilitate alignment of employee and shareholder interests. In the UK, employees are given the opportunity to become shareholders through the Company s Share Incentive Plan (SIP). Approximately 12% of eligible employees participate in the SIP.
